This was the first flight to carry two women, one of which became the first American woman to perform a spacewalk. This was also the first demonstration of a satellite refueling technique in space. Data on ocean phenomena was collected, along with measurements of air pollution in space. Other payloads carried included eight Getaway canisters.!
